ZAGAT REVIEW 03.25.14

The Haven

Why it’s great: The cozy, authentic Scottish restaurant doesn’t ride on PR-driven buzz, but on the word of mouth that results from serving hearty yet refined Alba comfort food and a strong selection of interesting native craft beers.
Must order: Start with a Scotch Egg ($7) hard-boiled and wrapped in crispy sausage, served with mustard and a light arugula salad. French toast ($12) with toffee sauce is another standout, and herbivores will love the Bubble and Squeak ($12), a sauté of seasonal veggies with pickled carrots and poached eggs (you can add pork if you like).
Insider tip: For the ultimate Scottish experience, join the Haven crew for an Easter Brunch April 20th with a Scottish Fiddle session at 2.30 PM till 5 PM
Hit it up: Saturday and Sunday, 10:30 AM-2:30 PM; 2 Perkins St., Jamaica Plain; 617-524-2836

Beer Spotlight-Skull Splitter

Brewer – Orkney Brewery
Skull Splitter is our strongest ale: which is named after Thorfinn Einarsson who was the 7th Viking Earl of Orkney. Sophisticated, satiny smooth with a deceptively light character, it is a tribute to our colourful forbear.

On the nose, this strong beer has a fruity malt character, with hints of dark fruit, spicy hop, dates and figs.

On the palate, rich and complex with sweet toasted malt, molasses, fresh and dried fruit and hints of warming spices.

Appearance
A crystal-clear, rich tawny-red colour beer; a tight, smooth head with hints of red and amber colour

Aroma
Juicy, almost fruity malt character, together with a medley of fresh and dried fruits, dates and figs, hints of ginger and cinnamon spice, hints of vanilla

Palate
A rich, fruity, wine-like complexity on the palate includes fresh and dried fruits, warm exotic spices, and light summer citrus fruits

Key Ingredients
Very best pale ale malt – and plenty of it – together with crystal and chocolate malts provide a rich, fruity backbone which is perfectly balanced by the spicy herbal character of East Kent Goldings hops

Beer Spotlight – Traquair House Ale

Brewer – Traquair House
Dating back to 1107, Traquair was originally a hunting lodge for the kings and queens of Scotland. Later a refuge for Catholic priests in times of terror the Stuarts of Traquair supported Mary Queen of Scots and the Jacobite cause without counting the cost.

TRAQUAIR House Ale
ABV 7.2% (Bottled)
The original ale first brewed in 1965 and now sold all over the world. Perhaps the most distinctive Scottish ale on the market and with its rich dark oakiness, this is a serious winter ale.
