It all started in Stonehaven, Scotland, with the infamous deep-fried Mars Bar. Now Chip Shop Night, a unique fry-for-all culinary event, has leapt the pond and landed in Jamaica Plain at the Haven every Wednesday from 9 p.m. until midnight. Usually a staple of state fairs and dietary missteps, fried foods take on incredibly creative incarnations in the batter-splattered hands of Chef Wax (real name Ben Waxler). The $5 menu at the year-old restaurant includes deliciously battered and deep-fried pizza, homemade pickles, Scotch eggs (as if the sausage coating weren’t enough), haddock, sausage, plus Snickers bars, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and of course, Mars Bars. What’s more, Haven recently instituted a contest to entertain your darkest deep-fried fantasies. If your idea wins, your portion is free and your name goes on the menu. April’s top pick, courtesy of “Chris and Leandra,’’ was a White Castle burger: Crowning the otherwise tasty but flabby little burger with a cozy crispness made it a delight to discover inside. The Haven, 2 Perkins St., Jamaica Plain, 617-524-2836.
