Boston Celebrates Three Scottish Holidays At The Hub’s only Scottish Restaurant

St. Andrew’s Day, Hogmanay, and Robert Burns Suppers takes New Englanders to Edinburgh

BOSTON, MA—The Haven, Boston’s only Scottish pub and restaurant, will celebrate three traditional
Scottish holidays now through late January.

“For me, celebrating Scottish holidays brings some of my homeland to Boston,” says Jason Waddleton, Owner of The Haven. “For Bostonians, I find people like celebrating new holidays and traditions, doing something different than what they do every year with Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, or New Year’s Eve. It’s a fun way to spice up the season with some new traditions and different customs. I love being able to tie together Scottish culture, cuisine, and entertainment all in each of these nights.”
November: St. Andrew’s Day ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Andrew’s_Day ) is today, Wednesday, November 30, 2011, celebrating the patron saint of Scotland and an official bank holiday in Scotland. Chef Terri Montilio has put together a few of her magical new menu items: Mussels in Kelpie Seaweed Ale, Venison Sassitch and mash, a special/secret cask from the Williams brothers in Scotland. Plus, music from the highlands and lowlands with Big Country, Simple Minds, Billy Connolly, and Andy Stewart, with Teenage Fanclub thrown in for good measure. Reservations can be made at http://thehavenjp.com/reservations .

December: Hogmanay ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogmanay ) is the Scot’s word for last day of the year and so it will be celebrated on Saturday, December 31st, 2011. The New Year’s Eve event features a three-course prix fixe menu, champagne toast, and live music. The evening will end with a fireball ceremony, which traditionally takes place in Stonehaven, Kincardineshire on New Year’s Eve. You can view last New Year’s Haven fireballs ceremony at http://youtu.be/cHwZ_9l4CL8 .

The three-course prix fixe menu is $50 per person.

January: The Burns Suppers

( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burns_supper) in late January, has celebrated Scotland’s national poet and lyricist Robert Burns for the last 200 years.

The Haven’s January 2011 Burns Suppers sold out and became a signature event for the restaurant.

In 2012, from Monday, January 23rd thru Wednesday, January 25th, The Haven’s guests will receive a full four-course dinner, a Scottish craft beer sampler, readings of Robert Burns’ poetry (http://www.robertburns.org ), live music with piper James Costello, songs from Burns by Scotland’s Kirstin Cairns, and Scottish country dancing from the Boston Highlanders dance troupe (http://www.highlanddanceboston.org ).

You can view last year’s fireballs ceremony at http://youtu.be/cHwZ_9l4CL8 .

The cost is $65 per person and tickets go on sale on Monday January 2nd at 10am

The Haven is located in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood, four miles southwest of downtown Boston, Massachusetts. It is easy to reach from the MBTA’s Orange Line at Stony Brook station or by the 39 bus from Back Bay Station along Huntington Avenue. Depart the bus at South Huntington Avenue and Perkins Street.
